FULLY INSURED VS. SELF-FUNDING

Fully Insured

A fully insured program is the more traditional way to structure an employer sponsored health plan.  

These plans provide predictable costs, minimal administrative responsibility, a wide network of providers and financial protection.   

However, they also come with limited customization options, higher premiums, lack of transparency and limited control over benefits.  

It’s important to carefully evaluate these factors when deciding on a health insurance plan and determine how it fits into your company’s financial and cultural goals.   

Self-Funded

Self-Funding is a type of plan in which an employer assumes the claims liability and pays claims as they actually occur. 

Benefits of self funding include; increased financial control and/or savings, full transparency of the plan performance,  more creative plan designs and outreach options and fewer regulations and administrative costs.  

Drawbacks to a self-funded plan is there is more direct financial risk and employer management.  However, purchasing stop-loss insurance protects employers against catastrophic care costs.
