Creating a stigma-free workplace is key to tackling the mental health crisis
Did you know that millions of Americans struggle with mental health conditions but are not getting the treatment they need? One reason is stigma – negative stereotypes about mental illness that persist both in and out of the workplace. This can cause people to delay treatment for an average of 11 years, or even prevent them from seeking help altogether.
But there are many benefits to having a stigma-free workplace. Encouraging employees to seek treatment can lead to reduced symptoms for 70-90% of those with mental health conditions. It can also improve job satisfaction, with more than 80% of employees reporting an improvement after receiving treatment. Addressing stigma can also foster loyalty and retention, with 57% of employees saying they would be more loyal and productive if their employer supported workforce mental health.
Ignoring mental health in the workplace can compromise the effectiveness of wellness programs. Mental health plays a significant role in physical health issues such as smoking, obesity, and chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. By incorporating mental health into your workforce wellness strategy, you can help employees manage their symptoms and become healthier and happier overall.
Breaking down stigma and changing workplace culture involves creating awareness, encouraging acceptance, and challenging false beliefs. This includes understanding mental health benefits, highlighting support and resources available through Employee Assistance Programs, and recognizing that mental health conditions are common and treatable. Providing mental health resources to employees supports employee wellness and can help make your business more resilient.
Addressing stigma in the workplace can make it easier for employees to get the help they need. While it can be a difficult conversation to start, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has developed a program to help companies take meaningful steps toward becoming stigma-free.
