Supporting Your Employees During Back to School and Beyond: A Guide for Employer Groups

As summer fades and the new school year begins, many of your employees are likely facing a new set of challenges. For those with school-age children, balancing work responsibilities with school drop-offs, pick-ups, and managing unexpected sick days can be particularly stressful. As an employer, you have a unique opportunity to support your workforce during this transition by offering flexibility and understanding.

Review and Enhance Your Leave Policies

As we continue to navigate the ongoing presence of COVID-19, along with the usual cold and flu season, illness is an inevitable part of life. Now is a great time to review your organization’s leave policies. Do they adequately support employees who need to care for sick family members? Consider enhancing your leave offerings to allow for greater flexibility, ensuring that employees can take time off when they or their loved ones fall ill. By reevaluating your policies now, you can better meet the needs of your employees during the school year.  It’s good to be familiar with the FMLA guidelines and any specific state requirements so when an event arises you are prepared.

Embrace Flexible Working Arrangements

We all know that life doesn’t always go as planned—especially for working parents. Offering flexible working arrangements can make a big difference in helping your employees manage their responsibilities at home and at work. If possible, consider implementing remote or hybrid work models. For roles where remote work isn’t feasible, flexible scheduling options can provide much-needed support.

Additionally, establishing core working hours can offer employees the flexibility to handle personal matters while still meeting their professional obligations. Clear communication about these options is key; let your employees know that you are committed to working with them to navigate life’s challenges. This kind of flexibility not only reduces stress but also fosters loyalty and retention within your workforce.

Provide Resources for Caregiving Employees

Family caregiving responsibilities are a reality for many employees. In fact, an estimated 18% to 22% of the U.S. labor force serves as caregivers, according to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers. Unfortunately, nearly one-third of these employees have left a job due to caregiving demands.

While not every employer can provide direct caregiving services, there are other ways to support your employees. Consider offering resources like workshops or informational handouts on local caregiving services and programs. Even if your organization doesn’t have specific caregiving benefits, simply checking in with employees during the back-to-school season can open up a dialogue and show that you care about their well-being. This can help alleviate some of the guilt that parents often feel when trying to balance work and family life.

Keep in mind that many schools end their day in the mid-afternoon, leaving parents with a gap in coverage until they finish work. Additionally, school holidays and professional development days can present challenges for working parents. By offering support, whether through flexible scheduling or resources for after-school care, you can help your employees manage these challenges more effectively.

Take Action to Retain Talent

The back-to-school season may seem like a personal issue for your employees, but it’s one that directly impacts their work life. By proactively supporting your employees during this time, you demonstrate a commitment to their well-being, which can lead to greater job satisfaction and retention. As an insurance broker, we understand the importance of providing comprehensive benefits that support your employees’ diverse needs. Let’s work together to ensure your workforce feels supported and valued throughout the school year and beyond.
